Meaning

I was given the ancient service of your faultless feet, and I scorned it and fell, and now I stand there wide-eyed and shameless. Do not forsake me, see! O you who wear a garland, in whose matted hair the heavenly Ganga, tossing up white pearls and conches and pushing along mandara flowers, is held captive, and on its waters the crescent moon rides like a boat!

Explanation

'Ancient service' is a bond of servanthood running through many births. In Saiva belief a devotee's service does not begin in this life; it continues from lives before. The poet grieves that he scorned that old bond.

The picture of the Ganga 'held captive' in Siva's hair is lovely: the river that came roaring down is stilled in his locks, becomes a quiet lake, and serves as a harbour for the crescent moon. An unruly mind can be stilled in the Lord the same way.

Thiruvathavurar Puranam of Kadavul Mamunivar; temple tradition of Uthirakosamangai

The Guru Who Returned at Uthirakosamangai

After the guru and his devotees vanished at Perunthurai, Manikkavasagar wandered alone from town to town with a single question in his heart: 'Why did you leave me behind?' His wandering brought him to Uthirakosamangai, an ancient shrine in the south-east of the Pandya land.

Uthirakosamangai is very old. Temple tradition says that here the Lord taught Uma the secret meaning of the Vedas; 'uthiram' means teaching and 'kosam' a hidden treasure. It is honoured as a place where a thousand sages did penance, and as the home of a Nataraja carved from emerald. It is also called 'the first Chidambaram'.

Standing in that temple with a breaking heart, the poet cried out in fifty verses, 'Do not forsake me, do not forsake me.' The Thiruvathavurar Puranam says the Lord, moved by his tears, appeared to him again in the very guru form he had shown at Perunthurai. That grace, 'I have not abandoned you; come to Thillai', set him walking once more. In every verse he calls on the 'King of Uthirakosamangai', in thanks for that returning grace.
