Meaning

Your devotees gather again and again, bathe in grace, laugh and rejoice, while I wilt and wilt with no way out. Shall I stand like a withered tree? O my Owner, let me sulk with you again and again and then make up and mingle with you, my heart melting, overflowing and softening, dancing and dancing, till I become that very bliss, mingled with your grace.

Explanation

In this last verse every word doubles: gathering and gathering, wilting and wilting, sulking and sulking, dancing and dancing. The devotees' joy and his own wilting stand face to face. Oodal, in Tamil love poetry, is the mock anger between lovers, and the making-up that follows is all the sweeter. Manikkavasagar asks to sulk and make up with the Lord in just that way.

The last word is kalandhe, 'mingled'. The first word of the first verse was kalandhu. Beginning with one who was among the devotees but did not know it, the circle of the anthathi closes with one mingled with grace.

Upamanyu, Who Cried for Milk and Was Given an Ocean

Upamanyu was the son of the sage Vyaghrapada. He grew up in a poor hermit's hut, and one day he drank cow's milk in a rich man's house. Back home he cried, 'Mother, I want milk.' His poor mother stirred flour into water and gave it to him. He drank it and cried even harder: 'This is not milk.'

With tears in her eyes his mother said: 'My son, we are poor forest-dwellers. Without the grace of Lord Siva we will never have milk. Pray to him.' The boy held on to those words. He went into the forest, chanted 'Namasivaya' and did penance.

To test him, the Lord came in the form of Indra and said, 'Leave Siva and worship me, and I will give you what you want.' The boy refused: 'I will ask for nothing from anyone but Siva. If he does not give it, I will stay hungry.' Seeing that firmness, the Lord appeared in his true form with Uma and gave the boy not a bowl of milk but the whole ocean of milk. He blessed him with everlasting youth and a place among the foremost of his devotees.

In Pirarthanai Pathu Manikkavasagar speaks of 'the vast sea of nectar full of grace'. To one who cried for a single drop, the Lord gives an ocean. But the crying must be true, and the prayer must be to him alone.
