Explanation

Two words in this verse are important, 'porutporulaar' and 'arutporul'. The first refers to those whose aim is only wealth, and the second to the wealth of grace. Valluvar did speak greatly of worldly wealth, but he also says in another verse that the wealth of grace is the wealth among wealths. Here he says that those who contemplate that higher wealth will not dive into a lowly pleasure.

'Punnalam' is lowly pleasure. 'Nalam' means pleasure or good, and 'punmai' means lowliness or pettiness. Why is that pleasure called lowly? Because it is given on the basis of wealth and not of love. Any pleasure is exalted only when it is rooted in love and compassion. A pleasure without root remains petty.

'Thoyaar' refers to dipping oneself in water. As the body is wholly wetted in a pond, one who dips into such pleasure gets the mind and life soaked in that mire. The wise will not go down into it.

In present life the meaning is simple. What we hold as the highest wealth of life decides our choices. People who value compassion, love and service are not easily drawn by lower attractions.

So young people should first make clear to themselves what their highest aim is. When the aim is clear, passing attractions do not become obstacles. A lofty purpose is the shield against low delusion.

A story

Arjuna and Urvashi

This episode is told in the Vana Parva of the Mahabharata.

During the exile of the Pandavas, Arjuna went to the world of the gods to obtain divine weapons from Indra. Indra welcomed him warmly and lodged him in his palace. There the Gandharva Chitrasena taught Arjuna song and dance, and Arjuna learnt all the arts with great devotion.

In those days Urvashi, the famed apsara of heaven, was drawn to Arjuna's beauty and valour. It is said that Indra himself sent her. One night, decked in her garments and ornaments, she came lovingly to Arjuna's rooms and told him her wish directly.

Arjuna was shocked and closed his eyes. "Mother, you are like a mother of our line. You were once the wife of Pururavas, an ancestor of our Puru lineage. To me you are as worshipful as Kunti," he said, and bowed to her with humility. There was no fear or anger in his voice, only clarity and respect.

Urvashi felt insulted. In anger she cursed him: "You do not understand the minds of women. You will live for a year as a eunuch." Arjuna accepted it calmly. When Indra heard, he praised Arjuna's conduct and softened it: "This curse will be a boon to you; it will serve you in the year when you must live in hiding."

So it happened. When the Pandavas lived in disguise in the kingdom of Virata, Arjuna lived concealed as the dance teacher Brihannala. The curse helped him.

When the call of a low pleasure came, Arjuna avoided it, keeping his higher aim in mind. The tale shows that a mind full of wisdom and respect is not charmed by the light of pleasure.
