Explanation

'Alar' means mire or slush. A man who steps into it finds it hard to come out however he tries. Every step sinks him deeper. Valluvar uses this as a simile to show how a man who has sunk into pleasure given only for wealth gets dragged down. The word 'menthol', soft shoulder, signals tenderness, and so there is a play of contrast: such a dangerous mire hides within a soft appearance.

In 'purai ilaap pooriyargal', 'purai' means excellence, 'puraiilaa' means without excellence, and 'pooriyar' are petty, mean persons. Valluvar points out that those are the ones who sink in it. The wise know their limits and do not step in. Petty minds trust its outward softness and put their foot in.

We must remember again that the verse should be read with humanity. What is compared to a mire is not a person but the pattern of relationship that arises from desire for wealth. The man who sinks in it loses his reputation, wealth and peace of the family.

In modern life the mire need not be a particular place. It appears in many forms: the trap of debt, addiction to intoxicants, the habit of gambling. Each looks soft and sweet at first, and then pulls deep.

So it matters to be alert at the first step. The one who, standing at the edge of the mire, heeds the warning and steps back will save his life.

A story

Kovalan and Madhavi

This story is told in the Tamil epic Silappatikaram. Its heroine Kannagi is worshipped as the goddess of chastity in temples in Tamil Nadu and Kerala.

In Kaveripoompattinam, Kannagi was the daughter of the great merchant Manaikan, and Kovalan was the son of the merchant Masattuvan. They married and lived happily. Kovalan was rich, educated and accomplished in the arts.

One day the debut performance of Madhavi, a beautiful and gifted dancer, took place. She excelled in dance and song. Watching it, Kovalan was captivated by her art and her beauty. He gave her ornaments and gifts and drew near to her. Slowly he forgot even to return home.

Madhavi's house was filled with sweetness and music. Kovalan spent all his wealth there. Kannagi waited alone at home lighting the lamp. She never complained. A long time passed in this way. Kovalan's wealth ran out.

At the Indra festival on the seashore, a song sung by Madhavi roused doubt in Kovalan's mind. Thinking she was singing of someone else, he left her. When he returned home, Kannagi received him quietly. She gave him her anklet and said, "Sell this and begin trading."

They went to Madurai. When Kovalan went to sell the anklet, a false accusation was made, and on the order of the Pandya king he lost his life. Kannagi's wrath burned Madurai, says the epic. Madhavi later took to renunciation, it is said.

Kovalan sank in delusion and lost his wealth and the happiness of his family. Though he recognised his fault later, it came late. The tale shows that sinking into a mire is easy and coming out is hard.
