Explanation

'Nirainenjam' is understood by commentators in two ways. One is a mind with the power of self-restraint. The other is a mind that knows how to fill the hearts of others. Both fit this verse. One who lacks a full and steady heart stumbles in body and mind. Such persons, says Valluvar, take part in a union where the mind is kept elsewhere and only the body joins.

'Pira nenjir penip punarbavar' is a subtle phrase. It points to those who unite in body alone while thinking of something else in the mind. Here again what is faulted is not anyone's circumstances but the emptiness of a union in which mind and body do not meet.

The verse speaks a sharp truth: where two minds do not join, there is no real connection. A relationship is not mere bodily nearness but a joining of minds. Where that is absent, any pleasure that appears does not last, and the one who takes part in it can never find contentment of heart.

Today too there are many situations where the body is near and the mind elsewhere. A person sitting with the family absorbed in a phone, or a person alone in the middle of a crowd, are examples. Real connection is made by attention and care.

Whatever we give our whole mind to, in that we find fulfilment. People whose minds are not full will not be satisfied with whatever they gain. That is what lies inside this verse.

A story

Vishvamitra and Menaka

This story is told in the Bala Kanda of the Ramayana and in the Adi Parva of the Mahabharata.

The king Kaushika turned towards renunciation and became Vishvamitra. He performed tremendous penance. By the strength of his austerities the universe itself trembled. Indra, afraid that his position might be taken, decided to disturb the penance. He called Menaka, an apsara of his court, and ordered her, "Go and break Vishvamitra's penance."

Menaka hesitated. She feared the sage's anger. "I may fall under the curse of one who has the strength of penance," she said. Indra promised his support, and sent the wind and the god of love to help her.

Menaka came to a flowery grove where Vishvamitra was in penance. It was as if spring had begun; flowers and a gentle breeze filled the place with fragrance. Vishvamitra opened his eyes at her beauty. His mind faltered for a moment. The Ramayana says that he lived with her for ten years, and thought them but a single day.

As time passed he realised: "This is Indra's stratagem. My penance has been broken." He blamed himself. He saw that Menaka had come with a different purpose in her mind. He did not turn his anger on her. He saw that his own mind had not been full, and that was his fault. He sent her away, went to the north, and did severe penance again.

The daughter born to them later became known as Shakuntala, says the Mahabharata. By his firmness Vishvamitra finally attained the rank of Brahmarishi.

Menaka's mind was on another purpose, and Vishvamitra's mind faltered at a moment when it was not full. The story shows that a mind that is not full is easily deluded where the other's mind is elsewhere, and that the firmness to see a fault and mend it is what gives greatness.
