Explanation

In the previous verse Valluvar spoke of the wise who contemplate grace. Here he says 'mathinalaththin maanda arivinavar'. 'Mathinalam' is excellence of intellect, and 'maanda arivu' is knowledge made excellent by it. There are two levels. First is a naturally sharp mind, and over it a finer knowledge grown by learning and experience. Those who have both see the true face of delusions.

'Podhunalaththaar' are those whose charm is common to all. That is, their affection or pleasure is not reserved for one but is given to anyone who pays. Such pleasure becomes a trade with no continuity, and there is no distinctness of love in it. Love grows only in a relationship marked by exclusiveness and trust.

Why do the wise avoid this? Knowledge is not mere information but the power to judge what lasts and what fades. They see that it does not suit wisdom to run after a pleasure that does not last. So they spend their time and mind on lasting good.

Even today there are numerous attractions offered to everyone alike on the internet and in advertisements. Each demands our attention, money and time. The wise decide for themselves where their attention goes.

So excellence of mind shows itself not only in education but in the daily choices of life. Every choice we make declares the quality of our knowledge.

A story

Shuka at the Lake of the Apsaras

This story is told in the Shanti Parva of the Mahabharata and in the Devi Bhagavata.

Shuka, the son of the sage Vyasa, was steeped in wisdom from birth. Tradition says that from the moment he was born he had a pure mind fit for penance. He had no attachment to worldly pleasures, and while still young he set off on the path of renunciation.

One day Shuka left his father's hermitage and walked through the forest. Vyasa, thinking of the separation from his son, ran behind him calling, "Son, stop!" Shuka noticed nothing, lost in thought of Brahman, and went on.

On the way there was a lake where celestial nymphs, the apsaras, were bathing. Though they saw the young ascetic walk past, they showed no hesitation and went on playing in the water. And Shuka did not look at them; his mind was not there. He passed on like a child, or like a pure sage.

After a little while Vyasa reached the same place. When the apsaras saw him they rose in haste, hurried to the bank and put on their garments. Vyasa was surprised. "My son is young, and you did not fear him. You cover yourselves only on seeing me, an old man?" he asked.

They answered humbly, "Sage, to your son there is no distinction of man and woman. His mind is wholly settled in pure knowledge. But in you the distinction still lives in the heart." Vyasa understood the truth and marvelled at his son's high state.

Shuka was no enemy of pleasures; his mind was filled with something higher. The story shows that knowledge made excellent by clarity of mind stands unmoved before ordinary pleasures.
