Explanation

The word 'anangu' has two senses in the Tamil tradition. One is a beautiful woman or a divine woman. The other is a harmful force that seizes and torments men. In this verse both are joined, which is a notable beauty of the verse. The simile shows something that comes with allure, takes hold of a man and torments him. That beauty and fear meet in one word is an artistic subtlety.

'Aayum arivinar allaarkku' is the key to the verse. Those who have the knowledge that examines and discerns are not struck by such delusion. It turns into an 'anangu' only for those without knowledge. So the fault is not in the thing that deludes, but in the mind that does not examine. When the lamp of knowledge burns, the shadow called 'anangu' is gone.

'Maaya makalir' are women who work illusion; those who hide their real mind and show an appearance. Illusion is hiding what is there and showing what is not. To recognise it one needs the power of inquiry. The wise tell apart outward appearance and inward purpose.

In the world today the glamorous world of advertising, false news and deceptive investment schemes are all new forms of this illusion. The first shield against them is a questioning mind. The habit of asking 'Is this true? What is its purpose?' protects us.

So Valluvar here advises us less to be afraid and more to grow in knowledge. When knowledge grows, the 'anangu' leaves on its own.

A story

Bhasmasura and Mohini

This story is told in the Bhagavata Purana and the Shiva Purana.

The demon Bhasmasura performed severe penance to Lord Shiva. Pleased with his austerity, Shiva appeared before him and asked, "What boon do you want?" Bhasmasura asked, "Let anyone on whose head I place my hand be burnt to ashes." Shiva granted that boon.

Having received it, Bhasmasura's arrogance knew no bounds. He wondered where to test the power of the boon. His eyes fell on Shiva himself. "I will test it on him," he decided and chased him. He tried to kill the very one who had given him the boon.

Shiva ran, and the demon ran behind him. At last Shiva reached Vishnu, who understood the situation. The Lord took the form of the lovely Mohini and walked alone along the forest path.

When Bhasmasura saw Mohini he was charmed by her beauty. He forgot his boon and his pride, everything. "Who are you? Marry me," he said. Mohini smiled. "I will marry only one who knows dance. Imitate my dance," she said.

She danced. The demon copied the gestures of her hands one by one. He was wholly under the spell. At one moment Mohini placed her hand on her own head. Bhasmasura copied her and put his hand on his own head. That instant he was burnt to ashes.

Though he knew the power of his boon, the demon lost his judgement before a bewitching appearance and brought about his own end. The tale shows that for those without discernment, enchantment becomes an affliction.
