Explanation

The verse begins with 'thannalam paaripaar', those who truly protect their own good. 'Nalam' here is not only bodily health but also peace of mind, welfare of the family, wealth and reputation. Valluvar's view is that one who knows what his true good is will not lose it for a passing pleasure. The word 'self-interest' is usually regarded as a fault, but here it is the wisdom to think of long-term good.

'Thagaiserukki' means taking pride in one's beauty and finery, and 'punnalam paaripaar' means tending lowly pleasure in order to sell it. Taken together they show a state in which one's charm has been made a commodity. In that state a relationship becomes an exchange. When love turns into trade, its sweetness is lost.

'Thol', the shoulder, stands for the embrace. 'Those who do not touch the shoulder' means those who do not involve themselves in that state. The wise choose any pleasure after seeing where it ends. They do not choose a pleasure that ends only in regret.

In the world today the routes by which instant pleasures are sold are everywhere. Gambling sites, intoxicants and excessive buying are examples. Though attractive outside, they are things that eat away our good within. The habit of looking at everything in the long term is what protects us.

So those who truly wish their own good are careful in choosing pleasures. What they refuse is not pleasure but the pain that looks like pleasure.

A story

The Clarity of Yayati

This history is told in the Adi Parva of the Mahabharata and in the Bhagavata Purana.

Yayati was a famed king of the lunar line, married to Devayani, daughter of Shukracharya. Shukracharya, angered for a reason, cursed Yayati to grow old. The king was shaken. When he asked forgiveness, the sage told him a way to change the curse: "If any of your sons gives you his youth, you can get your youth back."

Yayati asked his sons. The elder sons refused. The youngest, Puru, out of love for his father, gladly gave his youth. Yayati regained youth and began again to enjoy the pleasures of the world. For a thousand years he lived immersed in pleasure, says the Purana.

After a thousand years his desire was not satisfied. As pleasures increased, desire increased too. One day he reflected on his life. "As ghee poured on fire does not put it out but makes it burn more, so desire is not stilled by enjoyment but grows," he realised.

Yayati called his son Puru and gave him back his youth. "My son, I sought pleasure for a thousand years and my desire is not filled. Now I shall do penance. You take my kingdom," he said. He crowned Puru and went to the forest to perform penance.

Yayati's clarity came very late, but he did reach it in the end. Those who truly care for their own good need not wait a thousand years to see where low pleasure ends.

Not everyone has to learn by experiencing for a thousand years, as Yayati did. If we reflect beforehand on the lesson he gives, our good will be protected. That is the message of the story.

To reflect on

Which pleasure that you are chasing might be teaching you the same lesson Yayati learnt, only more slowly?
