Explanation

The heroine addresses her friend as 'ilangizhai', 'O lady of shining ornaments', which points to the friend's well-being and to the heroine's ease with her. She tells her friend her sorrow. The phrase 'indru marappin', 'if I forget today', is subtle. She can never forget him; yet she imagines a state in which she had forgotten him today. Then, she says, the result would appear at once: her beauty would leave, and the ornaments on her arm would slip off.

The verse gives meaning in two ways. One is that remembering him is what keeps her beauty and her vitality in place. The other is that even if she forgot today, her body would proclaim his absence. Parimelazhagar sees a hint that without the memory she could not stay alive. Some see a firm refusal of the consolation that if she did not think of him her grief would lessen. Either way the point is that forgetting would not be a release for her.

It is easy for us to tell those who suffer in separation, 'forget him.' But this verse helps us see that for some people the memory of love is itself the support of life. The memory brings pain, and the same memory keeps one alive. Valluvar packs that double truth into a simple conversation with a friend. The verse also hints at a lesson for friends: that comfort is better offered by staying beside someone and listening than by asking them to forget what is dearest to them.

A story

The Bangles on Deepavali Night

This is an imagined story set in Hindu cultural life.

In a village near Madurai lived a young wife named Poongothai. Her husband Sundaram had gone to work in another town. He had written a letter saying he would come for Deepavali; but as the festival drew near he had still not come. The village filled with firecrackers, new clothes and sweets.

Poongothai's friend Malar saw that her face had faded. 'Kothai, forget him for just a day and be happy at the festival. Otherwise your health will suffer,' she said lovingly. Poongothai answered with a faint smile, 'Malar, even if I forget him for one day, my bangles will slip away.' Malar looked at her hands: the old bangles had grown loose and slid down to her elbow.

That evening Poongothai set clay lamps in a row at the door. As she lit each one she prayed silently, 'May he be well; may he come soon.' Her memory brought her sorrow, yet it was also her light.

Long after night had fallen, a cart stopped at the end of the street. Malar heard it first; Kothai ran out. Sundaram had caught the first cart available as soon as his work ended. Seeing the lamps shining at the door, he said, 'You did not forget me, and you showed me the way.'

Poongothai smiled; Malar laughed and said she would put new bangles on her. That Deepavali bloomed for them with a light of its own.

The tale gently shows that memory, though it brings sorrow, also brings life.

To reflect on

When a friend is grieving a separation, do you tell them to forget, or do you sit beside them with their memory?
