Explanation

This verse is the peak of praise in Oodaluvakai. 'Puththel naadu' is the world where gods live, heaven. The heroine asks: is there a heaven sweeter than sulking? And she says that among lovers united like water mingled with earth, there is no sweetness anywhere else greater than sulking. To raise the sulk above heaven is a bold simile.

The simile 'nilathodu neer iyaindhannaar' is very beautiful. When water has mingled with earth it cannot be separated; water and earth cannot stand apart by themselves. Among lovers who cannot be parted like that, even if a sulk comes it has no power to part love, and so they may enjoy it without fear. That is why it becomes heaven.

This verse also states a condition for the sulk. The joy of the sulk belongs only to united lovers, not to those standing at the edge of parting. If love is firm, the sulk is a game; if love wavers, the same sulk is a danger.

The inner thought of the Tamil tradition is that heaven is not in another place but in a home full of love. Valluvar says it in connection with the sulk.

In life too, the small quarrels and jokes of a sweet relationship make a home heaven. This verse grows the habit of finding joy in the simple events of daily life.

A story

Narada's Invitation to Heaven

This is an imagined story set in Hindu cultural life. The sage Narada appears in it only to show the charm of the Puranic tradition.

In a village on the bank of the Kaveri lived a fisherman named Manikkam with his wife Valli. The two lived united like earth and water. One day the sage Narada passed by their hut. Seeing Manikkam's simple life, his heart melted, and he asked, 'I am delighted to see the pure love of you two. Shall I take you one day to the world of heaven?'

Manikkam looked at Valli. Valli stood with her face slightly lifted; that morning she had sulked because Manikkam had gone fishing and come late. Narada looked at her face and smiled. 'What, your face is drooping?' he said.

'Swami, he came late; so I sulked. See, he is trying to soothe me. Just watching it is sweet to me,' said Valli. Manikkam bowed his head shyly. In his hand was the fish she liked.

'In heaven there is no such joy; there is no sulking there,' Narada laughed. 'Stay here. To be here is heaven for you,' he blessed them and went.

Manikkam and Valli often remembered that word afterwards. Their hut stood, then and now, as a heaven of love for the people of that village, the villagers say.
