Explanation

This verse does not hide that the sulk gives a little pain. 'Siru thuni' is that small pain. The heroine admits that it makes love wither a little. But she says that by that withering love does not lose its dignity; rather it 'paadu perum', that is, gains distinction and greatness. This is the great fruit of the sulk.

As a withered creeper revives with rain, love withered by a sulk flourishes more through the soothing. The word 'nallali' is noteworthy here. 'Ali' is the grace, compassion, love that the hero shows. When it is good, even if it withers through the sulk, it has the power to sprout again. That power is its greatness.

A fine distinction should be seen in this verse. The word 'siru', small, limits the measure of the distress. If the distress becomes great, love perishes without gaining greatness. Only while it is small does the withering lift love. This is the limit of the sulk.

Commentators also take it as the friend's counsel to a heroine who does not know the sulk: do not fear a small withering; it will add to the greatness of love.

In our lives too, as a short fast is kept for the health of the body, a small quarrel may be accepted for the health of a relationship. But it must stay small, Valluvar warns.

A story

The Paddy that Revived after the Rain

This is an imagined story set in Hindu cultural life.

In a village on the bank of the Kaveri lived a farmer named Muthusamy with his wife Ponnammal. That year the rain failed in the month of Aadi. In the fields the paddy was withering and turning yellow. Muthusamy stood on the field bund with worry and sighed.

In those days a small quarrel arose at home too between Muthusamy and Ponnammal. In his worry over the withering crop he did not speak to her properly; it hurt her. For some days the two stayed silent. As the crop withered in the field, love also withered a little at home.

One evening suddenly the sky darkened. A great rain fell. Muthusamy ran to the field. The withered crops drank in the water and stood upright. His face brightened. When he returned, Ponnammal was standing at the door, drenched. She too was glad, looking at the sky.

Muthusamy came near her and said, 'Ponnu, this rain fell for both of us together.' She looked at him and smiled softly. 'The withered crop stands greener through the rain; our withered talk will be the same,' she said. Muthusamy held her hand.

That night the two stood under one umbrella and listened to the rain. The villagers who heard of it laughed that withered love had sprouted and stood richer than before. That year taught them that the withering is the way to the sprouting.
