Explanation

In this verse the heroine reveals the complex state of her sulk. She is sulking; but she has not let go of the embrace. The subtlety of this state is that she sulks while embracing. Within that sulk arises a 'padai', a force, and it breaks her heart. 'Padai' means a weapon, or a host of soldiers. Though the weapon of the sulk is shot at the hero, it breaks her own heart.

This is a contradiction of the sulk: the one who sulks begins with the firmness of her heart. But the hero's nearness, his touch, his face break that firmness. Though she means to sulk, her heart melts. Her force turns against herself.

This verse also shows the limit of the sulk. However much one sulks with a heart full of love, the sulk cannot last. Love wins in the end. That is why Valluvar asked that the sulk be kept small.

Commentators take it as the heroine lamenting to her friend. 'I meant to sulk, but my own heart was defeated,' she says. That defeat itself becomes joy here.

In our lives too there are moments when, meaning to be angry, the heart softens with love. It is good to accept them not as shame but as the strength of love. It is a comforting truth that we are defeated not by anger but by love.

A story

The Moment Radha's Sulk Melted

This is a tale based on the tradition of Jayadeva's Gita Govinda. That Sanskrit poem sings the love of Radha and Krishna as ashtapadis. Here we tell its idea briefly and with respect; details vary with the textual variants.

In the spring in Vrindavan Radha waited for Krishna. Hearing that he had spent time with other gopis, her heart drooped. When Krishna returned, she turned her face away and gave voice to her hurt in sharp words, says the poem.

But her whole heart sought only Krishna. Her friend went as a messenger to her and told her of Krishna's longing. Krishna stood before Radha and begged, 'Place your lotus foot upon my head; cool my heart that burns with your anger with your love,' Jayadeva sings.

Radha's anger melted in that moment. She was one who longed for the embrace even while sulking; her force had turned against herself. She looked at Krishna. The yearning on his face broke her heart. She smiled and accepted him.

Radha's friend, standing in hiding, saw this and smiled. The poets imagine that she had been waiting just for the moment when Radha's anger melted. That night the moon shone in Vrindavan, and the waves of the Yamuna gently embraced the bank. Radha later told her friend, 'My heart refuses to let the anger last.' 'That is the power of your love,' said the friend. Devotees sing those songs with music even today.

The Vaishnava tradition takes this scene as the sulk and embrace between the soul and the Lord. To householders it is the sweet lesson that in a sulk love wins.

Devotees say with a smile that the 'force that breaks the heart' of which Valluvar speaks is here Radha's own love.
