Explanation

A sulk is a game; who loses in it? The one who first comes down and speaks, or first smiles, or first asks forgiveness. The world would generally call them the losers. But Valluvar says, 'Those who lose in a sulk are the winners.' For the fruit of that defeat shows in the union; the one who yielded first is the first to receive love.

In 'athu mannum' the particle 'mannum' shows certainty. It means that this victory is sure. That it 'will be seen in the union' means that the fruit of the victory is revealed in the joy of union. What the loser gave up was a trifling pride; what he gained was full love.

This is a deep lesson in life. Victory in a relationship does not lie in defeating the other; it lies in the two joining. One who tries to win in the sulk loses the union; one who dares to lose in the sulk gains the union. So true victory lies in the courage to accept defeat.

Commentators such as Parimelazhagar also take this as counsel that the sulk should soon be soothed and not prolonged. The inner sense is that if the hero himself first yields, the heroine too will be glad.

In our lives too, in family and friendship, the one who first comes down protects the relationship. The stubbornness of 'Why should I speak first?' has broken many relationships. One who lets go of that stubbornness is truly the winner.

A story

The Kabaddi Champion and His Wife's Sulk

This is an imagined story set in Hindu cultural life.

In a village near Madurai Murugesan was the village's famous kabaddi player. Everyone said no one could defeat him. His wife Valli was very loving; but she had a stubbornness just like her husband's.

At a Pongal festival Murugesan got absorbed in the kabaddi match and forgot the task Valli had asked of him. She waited and waited at home and grew sad. When he returned home at night she turned her face away without a word. In his pride Murugesan thought, 'Do you know how many I have defeated? In this house too I will be the one to win,' and simply sat there.

The two did not speak for two days. On the morning of the third day, while playing on the kabaddi field, a truth dawned on Murugesan: the one who stands stubbornly loses the game; the one who knows when to retreat and when to advance wins. He hurried home.

Standing before Valli he said, 'Valli, I have lost in this game. You have won.' Valli looked at him in surprise. 'You have lost?' she said. 'Yes; but this defeat is a great victory for me,' Murugesan smiled. Valli laughed and embraced him.

From then on Murugesan would proudly tell the villagers that he had been defeated by his wife. His sweet victory was known only to him.
