Explanation

This verse speaks from the hero's side. He has done no wrong to the heroine, and she finds no fault in him. Even so he says there is a delight in standing a little apart from the heroine's soft shoulders. 'Agaralin aangu ondru udaiththu' means there is a certain delight in being apart. Here he names that delight as an unspecified distinction, 'aangu ondru'; it cannot be explained fully.

In what does this delight lie? In the gap of distance a longing to come near again is born. Closeness without longing is tasteless. A small gap increases the preciousness of closeness. In earlier chapters he called the sulk salt; here he calls the small distance caused by the sulk a delight.

The word 'mentrol', soft shoulder, is noteworthy here. The delight lies in remaining apart while remembering the softness of her shoulder. The longing that keeps thinking of her is itself that delight.

Commentators take this as the hero thinking within himself. He who has fully felt the joy of the sulk thinks of her even in the withdrawal.

In life too, the joy that comes from being apart for a while and meeting again is more special than always being with someone. But that gap should be small and accompanied by love.

A story

The Husband Waiting at the Door

This is an imagined story set in Hindu cultural life.

In a small town near Kanchipuram lived a teacher named Raghavan with his wife Seetha. There was no enmity between them; they treated each other with respect. That evening Seetha had a small grievance: after returning from school Raghavan had not told her the day's happenings but had become absorbed in a book. Seetha withdrew a little and sat in the kitchen.

Raghavan closed the book and came and stood at the kitchen door. He did not go inside. He noticed that Seetha was not looking at him. Leaning on the doorframe he said, 'Today at school I told a story; I wanted to tell it to you.' Seetha did not speak.

Raghavan went on standing with a smile. 'Even when you sulk it is sweet to me, Seetha. There is a special joy in standing at this door and thinking of you,' he said. Hearing it, Seetha felt like laughing. She turned her head.

'What are you doing standing there?' she said. 'I am thinking of the way to come near you,' said Raghavan. Seetha rose, went to him and said, 'Need there be so much thought to come near me?' They both laughed.

That night Seetha listened eagerly to the story he told. A small gap, and the closeness that came after it, made their love still sweeter.
