Explanation

In this verse the 'salt' comes again. Valluvar, who said in the earlier chapter that the sulk is salt, here speaks of the salt that arose in the union. Here 'uppu' is a charming word that points at once to the salt of sweat and to the salty savour of delight. In union beads of sweat rise on the heroine's forehead; the salty taste of that sweat becomes also the taste of love.

In 'oodip peruguvam kollo', 'kollo' is the voice of longing. He yearns: if she sulks again, we may get that salt of union again! That is, the union that comes when a sulk is soothed is very full; he wishes for the sulk itself in order to enjoy its savour again.

Here Valluvar makes poetry even of a natural event of the body. Sweat rising is natural; but to see it as a sign of love is the poet's vision. Since the word 'uppu' points on one side to sweat and on the other to savour, the verse has a double beauty.

Commentators take it that the hero desires the sulk again. When the joy of a sulk has once been had, the wish for it again naturally arises.

In life the memory of one good day makes us seek another like it. One who has tasted the savour of reconciliation after a sulk will recall it again. That memory keeps a relationship alive.

A story

The Therukoothu Actor's Anniversary

This is an imagined story set in Hindu cultural life.

In a village near Villupuram lived the therukoothu actor Chinnasamy. His wife was Anjalai. Twenty years had passed since their marriage. That day was their wedding anniversary. In the village a Bharata koothu was going on; Chinnasamy was performing in the role of Arjuna.

When the koothu ended and he returned home it was midnight. At the door Anjalai waited with a lamp. Her face was slightly dark. 'It seems you have forgotten even that it is our wedding day,' she said. Chinnasamy scratched his head. 'I came after removing the costume, Anjalai; the date was not in my mind,' he said.

Anjalai turned her face away. But inwardly she laughed. Chinnasamy stood near her and softly sang a koothu song. Hearing the song that begins 'My dear one, jewel-bright one', Anjalai could not hold back for long and burst out laughing. Sweat had beaded on her forehead; in the lamplight it glistened.

Chinnasamy touched the sweat with a finger and said, 'This is salt; but this is sweet to me.' Anjalai said shyly, 'If you forget again and again, I will sulk again and again.' Chinnasamy laughed and said, 'Then I shall forget next year too.'

The two sat at the door and talked for a long while in the moonlight. They remembered the savour of that night every year.
