Explanation

When rain fails, says Avvaiyar, charity shrinks. Without a harvest, even those who wish to give have nothing to give. The health of nature and the dharma of society are bound together.

Thiruvalluvar says the same: if the sky withholds its rain, neither charity nor austerity will remain in this wide world (Kural 19). That is why giving in hard times is an even greater virtue.

Periya Puranam, lives of Appar and Sambandar

The Daily Gold Coin at Thiruveezhimizhalai

From the Periya Puranam. While Appar and Sambandar were staying at Thiruveezhimizhalai, a severe famine struck the land. The rains failed, the fields dried up and the devotees wasted with hunger.

The two saints prayed to the Lord. He appeared to them in a dream and said, 'Every day we will place a gold coin for each of you on the temple step.' And so, every day, a coin was found there. With it they fed all the devotees.

The feeding continued until the famine ended. Though the sky held back, by the Lord's grace their giving did not shrink.
