Virunthiloarkku illai porunthiya ozhukkam

Meaning

Those who do not welcome guests lack proper conduct.

Word by word

for those who do not welcome guests

proper conduct

Explanation

Those who do not welcome guests, says Avvaiyar, lack proper conduct. Hospitality is the heart of our culture. 'Atithi devo bhava', the guest is God, says the Upanishad.

Hospitality needs no great wealth; a smiling face, kind words and a heart willing to share what one has are enough.

Valmiki Ramayana, Ayodhya Kanda

The Sage Bharadvaja's Feast

From the Valmiki Ramayana, Ayodhya Kanda. Searching for Rama, Bharata reached the hermitage of the sage Bharadvaja with his great army and the people of Ayodhya. He hesitated, wondering what a sage's small hermitage could do for so many.

Bharadvaja invited them all to a feast. By the power of his austerity he summoned the gods and Vishwakarma. That night palaces appeared in the forest, with tables laden with food, music and dancing. Everyone, from soldiers to elephants, ate to their heart's content.

By morning it had all vanished, but the hospitality lived on in memory. Even a simple sage honoured his guests with everything he had.

To reflect on

When did you last invite someone home and look after them as a guest?
