Explanation

Not travelling by night is sweet. Inna Narpathu called night journeys a sorrow; in olden times, a forest road in darkness put life itself at risk, and even today avoiding needless night travel is good sense.

The second is speaking clearly and without faltering. Eloquence is not speaking much, but saying what is right, briefly and without confusion; Valluvar praises it in his chapter on the power of speech. The third is declining the friendship of worthless people, even when they cling to you.

Careful conduct, clear speech and chosen friendships together keep a life safe.

From the Valmiki Ramayana (Kishkindha Kanda)

The Eloquence of Hanuman

From the Valmiki Ramayana. Searching for Sita, Rama and Lakshmana reached the shore of Lake Pampa. From the Rishyamuka hill, Sugriva saw them and feared they were enemies sent by Vali. "Go and find out who they are," he told Hanuman.

Hanuman went in the form of a mendicant, bowed to them and spoke. He praised their bearing, humbly asked who they were, and set out Sugriva's plight and his wish for friendship, briefly and clearly.

Hearing him, Rama said to Lakshmana in wonder: "He must have mastered the Rig, Yajur and Sama Vedas. He has spoken at length, yet not one word is wrong. His sentences are neither too long nor too short. There is no faltering and no haste, and no flaw in his face, his eyes or his brows. A king who has such a messenger will succeed in all he undertakes."

That first meeting began the friendship between Rama and Sugriva, and Hanuman's lifelong devotion.

Speaking clearly and without faltering is a sweet excellence; one clear speech set a whole history in motion.
