Meaning

Fine elephants weakened by ceaseless arrows, with blood running from fiery wounds, looked like hills covered in red flowers after rain: the field where the Kaveri king drove his elephant swiftly and slew his foes.

Explanation

Blood runs from the wounds of elephants weakened by ceaseless arrows. They look like hills covered with red flowers after receiving the rain: the poet's usual art of joining a gentle scene of nature to a terrible scene of war.

The verse ends with the Kaveri king driving his elephant swiftly and defeating his foes, showing that the kings of that age fought in the front line themselves.

From the Devi Mahatmya (Markandeya Purana)

The Goddess and Raktabija

From the Devi Mahatmya. In the army of the demon brothers Shumbha and Nishumbha was a demon named Raktabija, who held a boon: from every drop of his blood that fell to the ground, another demon like him would arise.

Whenever the Goddess's powers struck him, his blood flowed and thousands of Raktabijas sprang up. The whole field filled with his likenesses, and the gods trembled with fear.

Then Ambika said to Kali: "Chamunda, open your mouth wide. When my weapons strike, catch every drop of blood before it touches the ground." Kali did so, and swallowed those newly born as well. Since no blood touched the earth, no new demons were born, and at last Raktabija weakened and fell.

The inner meaning of the story is that evil which is reborn from every drop must be destroyed at the root. Anger and enmity, once answered in kind, multiply many times over; victory lies in not letting them fall to the ground.

This verse's field running with blood becomes, in the Goddess's battle, a war to stop evil from multiplying.

To reflect on

Has a small anger in your life multiplied into a larger enmity? How might you stop it at the first drop?
