Shiva Purana, Rudra Samhita (the destruction of Tripura)Shiva Burns the Three Cities with a Smile
From the Shiva Purana. The three sons of the demon Taraka performed fierce penance and received three flying cities of gold, silver and iron. By their boon, the cities could be destroyed only by a single arrow at the moment, once in a thousand years, when all three came into one line. They tormented the worlds.
The gods built Shiva a great chariot: the earth was the chariot, the sun and moon its wheels, Mount Meru the bow, the serpent Vasuki the string and Vishnu the arrow. The moment came when the three cities stood in one line.
But before Shiva loosed the arrow, He smiled. In the fire of that smile the three cities burned to ash, and all the gods' great preparations were not needed. Bhattar says the same thing: there is no shortage of grace; what blocks it is our own ego.
