Shiva Purana, Rudra Samhita (the slaying of Gajasura); Kashi traditionKrittivasa, Who Wore the Elephant Demon's Skin
From the Shiva Purana. Gajasura, the son of Mahishasura, was a demon in the form of an elephant. Armed with a boon from Brahma, he tormented the three worlds. When he entered the city of Kashi and terrified the devotees there, Shiva rose against him.
In a fierce battle Shiva lifted him on his trident. At the moment of death Gajasura's heart changed. 'Lord, wear my skin as your garment, so that my memory may live on with your name,' he prayed. Shiva did so and wrapped himself in the skin. That is why he is called Krittivasa, 'he whose garment is a hide'. The Krittivaseshwara temple in Kashi recalls this.
The Mother lovingly embraced the Lord even in this fearsome form. Bhattar's wonder is that the Lord who could change even an enemy's heart was himself won over by the Mother's love.
