Thangkuvar, karpaka thaaruvin neezhalil, thaayar inri / Mangkuvar, mannil vazhuvaay piraviyai, maal varaiyum, / Pongku uvar aazhiyum, eeraezh puvanamum, pooththa unthik / Kongku ivar poongkuzhalaal thirumaeni kuriththavarae.

Meaning

Those who meditate on the sacred form of the Mother with fragrant flower-tresses, from whose navel the great mountains, the surging salt ocean and the fourteen worlds blossomed, will dwell in the shade of the wish-granting kalpaka tree. They will have no more mothers to be born from; their faulty birth on this earth will fade away.

Explanation

The previous verse ended 'will dwell'; this begins 'they will dwell'. The last verse spoke of the golden grove; this one goes beyond it.

'With no more mothers, their faulty birth on earth will fade away' speaks of the end of rebirth: no mother will be needed to be born from again. There is a lovely paradox here: those who meditate on the great Mother who bore the worlds need no other mother. Mountains, oceans and worlds all blossomed from her navel; she is the mother of everything.

The life of Adi Shankara, the Bhaja Govindam (Moha Mudgaram) tradition

The Old Man Learning Grammar in Kashi

From the tradition of Adi Shankara's life. One day Shankara was walking through the streets of Kashi with his disciples. There an old scholar was loudly memorising grammar rules over and over, 'dukrin karane'. Seeing the old man spending the last days of his life on rules of grammar, Shankara was moved to pity.

Right there Shankara sang: 'Bhaja Govindam, bhaja Govindam, Govindam bhaja moodha mate! Worship Govinda, O foolish mind! When the hour of death comes, rules of grammar will not save you.' In the same song he said, 'punarapi jananam punarapi maranam, punarapi janani jathare shayanam': birth again, death again, and lying again in a mother's womb. To cross this cycle, remember God.

Shankara grieved over the soul entering a mother's womb again and again in the cycle of birth. Bhattar gives the assurance that those who meditate on the Mother's sacred form will be freed from that cycle, 'with no more mothers to be born from'.
