Explanation

The word 'pini' comes twice: 'piniyil pinipattu', bound in a disease. In Tamil 'pini' means both a sickness and a bond. Great greed eats at body and mind like a sickness, and it ties a person down like a rope.

'Oraa vinaiyaen' means 'I, who act without thinking'. That is the very nature of greed: it never lets you stop and reflect. It drives you from one want to the next, and so the poet 'wanders', 'uzhal', with no rest.

In the second half he calls Murugan 'veeraa', hero, and 'sooraa', valiant one, with a play on the name of his enemy Sooran. Sooran too was driven by greed. He already ruled vast worlds and still wanted the heaven of the gods. The Lord who destroyed that ancient, enormous greed can surely cure the poet's smaller one. The hint is gentle: my disease is not too big for you.

Kanda Puranam, Veerabahu's embassy

The Envoy to Sooran's Court

From the Kanda Puranam. By the boon he won from Lord Shiva, Soorapadman ruled over a thousand and eight worlds. Even that was not enough. He imprisoned the devas and threw Jayantha, the son of Indra, into his dungeons.

Before the war, Murugan sent his commander Veerabahu as an envoy. Veerabahu crossed the sea to Sooran's capital, Veeramahendrapuram, and stood before him in his court. 'Free the devas,' he said, 'and your kingdom will remain yours. Refuse, and your ruin is certain.'

Sooran had everything, yet he would not agree. The greed for more blinded him, and that refusal brought about his downfall. Sooran is the great example of what this verse calls 'oraa vinai', acting without reflection: greed never lets a person stop and see where the road is going. The Lord who ended that greed is the one the poet calls upon to cure his own.

To reflect on

What do you keep reaching for 'just a little more' of? When could you say 'enough'?
