Mahabharata, Vana ParvaAgastya Bows the Vindhya Mountain
From the Mahabharata. Long ago the Vindhya mountain, jealous of Mount Meru, began to grow taller and taller until it blocked the very path of the sun, and the world was thrown into darkness and confusion. The devas went to the sage Agastya for help.
Agastya travelled south and came to the Vindhya. Seeing the great sage, the mountain bowed low in respect. 'Stay bowed like this until I return from the south,' said Agastya. He never returned; he made his home in the southern land, and the Vindhya remains low to this day. Tamil tradition adds that it was Murugan who taught Agastya the Tamil language.
The mountain that blocked the way was humbled by the guru's grace, just as the poet hopes the Vindhya jungle of his own worries will be cleared by Murugan's.
