Thiruvilaiyadal Puranam, the purse of gold given to DharumiThe Poem Given to Dharumi Who Knew Nothing
From the Thiruvilaiyadal Puranam. The Pandya king announced a prize of a thousand gold coins for a poem that would settle a doubt in his mind. Dharumi, a poor Brahmin who served in the Madurai temple, could not compose a single verse, yet he badly needed money to marry. He wept before Lord Sokkanathar, Shiva of Madurai.
Shiva himself wrote a poem for him, 'Kongu thaer vaazhkkai'. In the royal assembly the great poet Nakkeerar found fault with it, and in the end Shiva came in person to argue the case. Dharumi received his prize.
For a simple man who knew nothing, the Lord wrote the poem, fought the argument and won the reward. It is an old echo of Arunagirinathar's wonder in this verse: 'he took as his own one like me, who knew nothing at all'.
