Explanation

'Saagaadhu', 'so that I do not die', does not mean that the body will never fall. It means: even when the body falls, let me not perish, but stay at your feet. The doubled 'kaa kaa', 'protect, protect', is the urgent cry of a child.

The poet calls Yama's coming a 'kalagam', a commotion: the wailing of relatives, the pain of the body, the terror of the mind. In the middle of all that confusion, the only refuge is the Lord's feet.

The last line names Murugan 'yogaa', the yogi, and 'Sivagnaana upadhesika', the teacher of the wisdom of Shiva. Yoga and wisdom are the ancient ways of passing beyond death, and their Lord is the one who can keep the devotee safe when Death arrives.

Periya Puranam, life of Thirugnanasambandar

Poompavai Rises From Her Ashes

From the Periya Puranam. Sivanesa Chettiar of Mylapore had hoped to give his daughter Poompavai in marriage to the child saint Thirugnanasambandar. But she died young of a snakebite. Heartbroken yet unshaken in faith, her father kept her bones and ashes in an urn.

When Sambandar came to Mylapore, the urn was placed before the Kapaleeswarar temple. Sambandar sang a hymn beginning 'Mattitta punnaiyang kaanal', and as the hymn ended, Poompavai rose from the urn alive.

Devotees remember this story as proof that death is not the final word; grace can overrule it. Tamil tradition also honours Sambandar as an incarnation of Murugan, and Arunagirinathar sings of him that way in the Thiruppugazh. So this is a story of Murugan himself, in Sambandar's form, keeping someone safe when Death had come.
