Meaning

Can it even be told, that Murugan of the peerless vel that strikes down his foes gave me his feet to wear upon my head? Those are the feet whose fragrance fills the world of liberation, the great crowns of the gods and the Vedas, and also the hot forest and the millet field!

Explanation

To wear the Lord's feet on one's head is the highest blessing in Tamil bhakti. The poet can hardly believe it has been given to him: 'Can it even be told?'

The list of places where those feet are fragrant is beautiful. On one side: 'veedu', the world of liberation; the great crowns of the gods, who bow their heads to them; and the Vedas, which sing of them. These are the highest of the high. On the other side: 'vengaadu', the hot, harsh forest, and 'punam', the millet field, the rough country where Murugan walked looking for Valli.

The same feet leave the same fragrance in both places. That is exactly why they can also rest on the head of a humble devotee. Feet that are at home both in the Vedas and in the millet field turn no one away.

Life of Pamban Swamigal

The Peacocks in the Hospital Ward

From the life of Pamban Swamigal. Pamban Swamigal, who lived in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, composed more than six thousand songs to Murugan, including the Shanmukha Kavacham, and honoured Arunagirinathar as his guide.

In old age he broke his leg in an accident in Chennai, and the doctors doubted it would heal. He lay remembering Murugan. His biography records that one night he saw two peacocks dancing in his hospital room, and Murugan in the form of a child lying beside him. Soon afterwards his leg healed. His followers still celebrate that day as the Mayura Vahana Sevana festival.

The feet that are fragrant in the Vedas also stepped into a hospital ward. As this verse says, they touch the highest heaven and the humblest ground alike.
