Explanation

Shaiva Siddhanta describes the world, the body and the soul in terms of thirty-six tattvas, principles, from earth at the bottom up to the subtlest sound at the top. All of them are instruments that bind the soul; beyond them is Shiva alone. 'Aaraaraiyum neeththu adhan mel nilai', leaving all six-times-six behind, the state above them, means exactly that.

The last line has a lovely word: 'kulirviththavane', you who brought coolness. The worlds had been burning under Sooran's cruelty, and Murugan cooled them. In the same way, the devotee whose heart burns in the heat of the tattvas and the fire of desire hopes to be cooled by him.

The question 'is there a way?' is humble, but the image of the cooled worlds already holds the answer. That coolness is the state beyond.

Life of Meykandar, the Shaiva Siddhanta tradition

The Child Who Became His Father's Guru's Guru

From the Shaiva Siddhanta tradition. In the thirteenth century a child named Svetavana Perumal was born at Thiruvennainallur. Tradition says that while he was still very young, the sage Paranjothi Munivar initiated him and named him Meykandar, 'the one who saw the truth'.

Arunandi Sivachariyar, the guru of the child's own family, heard that the boy was teaching students, and came to test him. 'What is aanavam, the root impurity of ego?' he asked. Without a word, the boy pointed straight at him. Arunandi saw his own pride, fell at the child's feet and became his disciple.

Meykandar's Sivagnanabodham is honoured as the foundational text of Shaiva Siddhanta, the teaching that shows how the soul passes beyond all thirty-six tattvas to Shiva: the very 'state beyond' that this verse longs for.
