Explanation

All through the book the poet has lamented the bonds of desire: fetters, nets, swings, jungles. Here they are all summed up in one word, 'nigalam', an iron shackle. And the shackle did not merely break; 'thugalaayina', it crumbled into dust.

How? 'Ninadhu anbu arulaal', by your loving grace. Not by the poet's effort, but by grace mixed with love. Murugan is addressed as Valli's beloved, the Lord who knows love from the inside.

When the shackle turned to dust, something was born: 'pesaa anubhuti', the experience that cannot be spoken. The word 'born' matters. Anubhuti is not manufactured; like a child, it comes into being of itself when the time is right. It cannot be spoken, and yet the poet has sung a whole book about it. This verse, which gives the book its name, is its quiet centre.

Life of Thayumanavar, Tiruchirappalli tradition

Thayumanavar and the Silent Guru

From the life of Thayumanavar. In the eighteenth century Thayumanavar served as chief accountant to the Nayak rulers of Tiruchirappalli. Even in royal service his heart searched for the truth. One day, at the Rock Fort temple, he met a renunciate known as Mouna Guru, the Silent Guru, who said to him only this: 'Summa iru', 'be still'.

Those two words changed his life. In time he left his post and the favour of the court and became a renunciate. His songs speak again and again of 'the bliss of simply being still', and he honoured the teaching 'Summa iru, sol ara' that Arunagirinathar received and sang of in Kandar Anubhuti.

The unspoken experience that is born when the shackles of desire crumble did not end with Arunagirinathar; it passed on to the devotees who came after him.
