Thirumurugatruppadai and the Sangam traditionThe Lord Who Dances on Every Hill
From the Thirumurugatruppadai and the Sangam tradition. Nakkeerar's Thirumurugatruppadai lists the places where Murugan dwells. After Thiruparankundram, Thiruchendur, Thiruvavinankudi and Thiruveragam, its fifth section is 'Kundru thor aadal', his dance on every hill.
The hill people, the Kuravar, held the veriyattu festival when the millet harvest was in. A priest called the Velan danced holding a vel, and the people gathered by the mountain springs and waterfalls, dancing the kuravai in a circle and calling on Murugan. Nakkeerar sings that as the women joined hands and danced, Murugan himself would come and dance among them.
The springs, waterfalls, millet fields and watch-platforms of this verse are the world of that ancient worship, where the Lord came to his people, as the poet hopes he will come to him.
