Explanation

'Kuriyaik kuriyaadhu', without aiming at the goal. As long as we strive to reach something, there are two: the one who reaches and the thing reached. The very effort keeps them apart. The way Murugan showed is knowing without striving.

The last two lines then list what ceased, one 'atru' after another: clinging, the world, speech, thought, knowledge and ignorance. That ignorance should cease is easy to understand. But why knowledge too? Because the thought 'I know' is the last trace of duality, a knower standing apart from what is known.

When even that falls away, what remains is the state of verse 12: 'I knew nothing at all.' It is not darkness; it is a fullness in which there is no one left to stand outside and know it.

The tradition of the Ashtavakra Gita

Janaka With His Foot in the Stirrup

From the tradition of the Ashtavakra Gita. One day King Janaka of Mithila, with one foot already in his horse's stirrup, asked the sage Ashtavakra: 'Can you show me the truth before I swing up into the saddle?'

Tradition says that with a few words from that young sage, whose body was bent in eight places, Janaka realised the Self in that very moment. In the Ashtavakra Gita he exclaims in wonder: 'I am spotless, at peace, pure awareness beyond nature. All this time I have been deceived by illusion!'

It was not climbed to step by step through effort; it happened in an instant because a guru pointed. That is what this verse means by 'nigazhththidalum', 'as soon as he showed it': the goal known without being aimed at.

To reflect on

Have you ever found something only after you stopped straining to get it?
