Explanation

Among the book's subtle philosophical verses comes the voice of a child: 'You are my mother, you are my father.' A child can tell its mother any worry; a father guides the way. For the poet, Murugan is both.

There is a lovely turn in the names. Murugan is called the son of Uma, and yet the son of the Mother becomes a mother to the devotee. The grand title 'marai naayagan', Lord of the Vedas, and the tender 'endhaay', my mother, sit side by side in the same verse.

That is the heart of bhakti: the Lord is as near as he is great. The one whom the Vedas praise is also the one to whom we can bring our smallest anxieties, as a child runs to its parent.

Tiruchirappalli sthala purana, the Lord Thayumanaswamy

The Lord Who Came as a Mother

From the sthala purana of Tiruchirappalli. Ratnavati, a devotee of Shiva, was expecting a child. As the birth drew near, her mother set out from the far bank of the Kaveri to help her. But the river was in flood, and her mother could not cross.

In her pain Ratnavati called on Lord Shiva. At once someone arrived in the very form of her mother, delivered the baby with tender care, and stayed for days looking after her. Only when the floods went down and her real mother arrived did everyone realise that the one who had been with her was the Lord himself.

That is why the Lord of the Rock Fort temple is called Thayumanavar, 'he who became the mother too'. It is a living picture of this verse: 'You are my mother, and you are the father who gives me grace.'
