Life of Kanakadasa, Udupi traditionThe Lord Who Turned Around for His Devotee
From the Udupi tradition. Kanakadasa, a great devotee of Krishna in the sixteenth century, was born into a hunter community. When he came to the Krishna temple at Udupi, he was refused entry because of his birth.
Kanakadasa did not grow bitter. He built a hut behind the back wall of the temple and sang to Krishna from there, melting with love. Tradition says that one day the back wall cracked open with a great sound, and the image of Krishna inside turned around from east to west to give Kanakadasa his darshan through the gap. That opening is still revered as the Kanakana Kindi, Kanaka's window.
It is a story of the 'flame surrounded by compassion' that this verse praises, which clears away the sorrow of whoever remembers it, wherever they may be standing.
