Meaning

Are you not the Lord who stands without any separation in the awareness of those who know by letting all other knowing cease? O Lord of the vel, who comes to dwell with those who have conquered frenzy, so that, with every clinging gone, the darkness is shattered!

Explanation

The phrase 'ondru ara', 'with not one left', comes three times: 'arivu ondru ara', with all other knowing gone; 'pirivu ondru ara', with no separation at all; 'serivu ondru ara', with every clinging gone. Each time, one more barrier falls away: the knowing that points at many objects, the gap between oneself and God, and attachment to the world.

The last line says he 'dwells with those who have conquered frenzy', the frenzies of desire and anger that churn the mind. He does not need to be summoned. When the mind is still, he is simply there.

It is like the moon on water. While the surface is churned by wind, the moon's image breaks into a thousand pieces. When the wind dies down, the moon appears whole, without anyone having to call it. That is the 'Lord without separation' of this verse.

The tradition of Shuka and King Janaka

Shuka Walks With a Bowl of Oil

From a traditional story. Shuka, the son of Vyasa, was wise from birth, yet his father sent him to King Janaka to learn. Janaka handed Shuka a bowl filled to the brim with oil and said, 'Walk all around this city without spilling a single drop.'

Shuka walked through Mithila, past decorated streets, music, dancing and crowded markets. He came back without spilling a drop. 'What did you see in the city?' asked Janaka. 'Nothing,' said Shuka. 'All my attention was on the bowl.'

Janaka smiled: 'To live in the middle of the world with the mind gathered and still: that is the state of the wise.' It is a simple picture of this verse, where God stands without separation in a mind that has conquered its frenzy.
