Explanation

The heart of the verse is the word 'mangaamal', without fading. A lamp fades when its oil runs out; a person caught in desire fades the same way, in body, in mind and in good name. The poet asks for protection: let me not go down that road and burn out.

The names he calls fit the request. Murugan is the warrior who rides his peacock into battle, and the struggle with desire is a battle that needs a warrior's help. He is also the son of the Ganga, the river that stands for purity in the Indian imagination. To the Lord in whom valour, purity and compassion meet, the poet brings his prayer for a pure and undimmed life.

Mahabharata, Vana Parva

Arjuna Refuses Urvashi

From the Mahabharata. During the years of exile Arjuna went to Indra's heaven to receive divine weapons. There the celestial dancer Urvashi was captivated by him and came to his rooms one night.

Arjuna rose respectfully and refused her: 'You were the beloved of my ancestor Pururavas. To me you are like a mother.' Urvashi, angry at being refused, cursed him to live for a year without his manhood. Indra softened the curse so that it would serve Arjuna during the final year of exile, when the Pandavas had to live in disguise; that is how Arjuna lived unrecognised as Brihannala in the court of Virata.

Because he held to his dharma even before overwhelming beauty, Arjuna did not 'fade', and in the end even the curse became a help to him. That steadiness is the boon the poet asks for here.
