Explanation

The body is in fate's ledger: fate watches over when it was born and when it will end. Yet we cling to it as if it would last for ever. 'Vidaa vinaiyaen', 'I, bound by karma, who will not let go', is the poet's honest admission of that clinging.

The last lines are surprising. The poet calls Murugan 'the one whose vow is to praise none but Valli'. All the gods praise him, and he in turn treasures only the love of a girl from the hill tribe. Devotees read Valli as the soul that loves God, so the image is a beautiful picture of how deeply the Lord cherishes his devotee.

If the Lord of the gods is so devoted to one who loves him, the poet can dare to hope that he too will be given those flower-soft feet, and with them, freedom from the body's grip.

Thiruthani sthala tradition and the Kanda Puranam

The Hill Where His Anger Cooled

From the tradition of Thiruthani. After the war with Sooran, and after a brief clash with the hunters when he took Valli as his bride, tradition says Murugan came to the hill of Thiruthani, and there every trace of anger left his heart. The name 'Thanigai' itself is understood as 'the place where it cooled'.

There Murugan sits peacefully with Valli, not as a warrior but as a bridegroom, in the form of love. Arunagirinathar sang many Thiruppugazh songs to the Lord of Thiruthani.

The Murugan this verse calls 'the one whose vow is to praise none but Valli' is this gentle Lord of Thanigai, at peace in love, the same Lord to whom the poet looks for the feet that free him from the body's hold.
