Explanation

Once more the poet counsels his own mind. The goal: to become part of Murugan's 'parivaaram', his retinue, the attendants who stand around a king. For a devotee there is no higher post than to serve close to the Lord.

There is only one obstacle, ego, and the tool that cuts it is surprising: 'poraiyaam arivu', the wisdom that is patience. Thiruvalluvar gave a whole chapter to forbearance. Ego cannot bear anything; at the smallest slight it hisses and rises. Patience cuts it at the root, because patience refuses to feed it.

There is a fine parallel. Outside, the Lord's vel split the mountain open. Inside, the devotee is to take up a vel of his own, patience, and with it split the mountain of pride.

Kanda Puranam, the defeat of Soorapadman

The Enemy Who Became the Peacock and the Rooster

From the Kanda Puranam. In the final battle Soorapadman turned himself into a giant mango tree standing in the middle of the sea. Murugan's vel split the tree in two. One half became a peacock, the other half a rooster.

When Sooran's pride was cut away by the vel, the devotion hidden inside him came to light. The compassionate Murugan accepted the peacock as his mount and the rooster as the emblem on his banner. Yesterday's enemy gained a place in the Lord's retinue for ever.

That is the message of this verse in story form: once ego is cut away at its root, anyone, even the fiercest foe, can find a place among the Lord's own.
