Explanation

In the first two lines the poet describes himself with three words: 'aadhaali', a braggart full of empty talk; one who knows nothing; and 'theedhaali', a doer of evil. And yet the Lord took such a man as his own! How can that ever be told? he asks in wonder.

The last two lines stand as the explanation. Murugan is the Lord of Valli, the hunter girl who wears the wild koodhalam flower of the hills, and he is praised even by the hosts of vetalas, the ghostly beings of the cremation grounds. Not only the gods but forest people and goblins are within the reach of his grace.

For such a Lord, taking a braggart as his own is no surprise; it is simply his nature. The verse moves from astonishment to understanding. The poet's unworthiness is real, but the Lord's embrace is wider still.

Thiruvilaiyadal Puranam, the purse of gold given to Dharumi

The Poem Given to Dharumi Who Knew Nothing

From the Thiruvilaiyadal Puranam. The Pandya king announced a prize of a thousand gold coins for a poem that would settle a doubt in his mind. Dharumi, a poor Brahmin who served in the Madurai temple, could not compose a single verse, yet he badly needed money to marry. He wept before Lord Sokkanathar, Shiva of Madurai.

Shiva himself wrote a poem for him, 'Kongu thaer vaazhkkai'. In the royal assembly the great poet Nakkeerar found fault with it, and in the end Shiva came in person to argue the case. Dharumi received his prize.

For a simple man who knew nothing, the Lord wrote the poem, fought the argument and won the reward. It is an old echo of Arunagirinathar's wonder in this verse: 'he took as his own one like me, who knew nothing at all'.
