Explanation

In verse 13 the poet denied everything: 'not form, not formless, not being, not non-being'. In this final verse he takes the very same words and affirms them: 'uruvaay, aruvaay, ulathaay, ilathaay', as form, as formless, as being, as non-being. He is none of these things, and he is all of them. The way of negation and the way of affirmation meet here at the end.

The pairs are beautiful: fragrance and flower, gem and its light, seed and life. In each pair the two cannot be pulled apart; the Lord is both the thing and what shines from it.

Then comes the one request: 'guruvaay varuvaay', come as guru. The one who is everything can be met only when he comes in a form we can follow. The book began with the guru's word, 'Be still', and it ends by calling the guru to come again. That is why devotees recite this verse at the close of every reading: it opens the door for the next one.

Bhagavad Gita, chapter 10

'Among Commanders, I Am Skanda'

From the Bhagavad Gita. On the battlefield of Kurukshetra, Arjuna asked Krishna: 'In what forms should I think of you?' Krishna described his glories: 'I am the taste in water, the light in the sun and the moon, the sacred syllable Om in all speech. I am the seed of all beings.'

In the middle of that long list comes one line: 'Senaaneenaam aham Skandah', among commanders of armies, I am Skanda. And Krishna closes: 'Wherever there is glory, beauty or power, know that it springs from a spark of my splendour.'

This chapter of the Gita is an ancient echo of Arunagirinathar's final verse, which sees the Lord as form and formless, fragrance and flower, gem and light, and then asks that the One who is all of these come close as a guru.

To reflect on

Today, pause for a moment before a flower or a light, and try to see the Divine in it.
