Meaning

The Lord who rides the blue peacock comes at any hour with lovely Valli of the hills. Those who clearly understand the discipline and the silence that guru taught are the true Shiva-yogis; they live having conquered time. The rest, mere doers of ritual, simply die.

Explanation

Rituals are only a beginning. Only when the discipline and silence the guru shows are realised within can one go beyond time. The Lord comes 'at any hour'; what is needed is the clarity to see him.

From the Katha Upanishad

Nachiketa's third boon

The boy Nachiketa, sent by his father's words, went to Yama's house and waited three days. Pleased, Yama gave him three boons. For the third, Nachiketa asked, 'Does a man exist after death or not?' Though Yama offered wealth and kingdoms instead, the boy would not be moved. At last Yama himself taught him the knowledge of the deathless Self. One who gains that knowledge has conquered death.
