Rig Veda, Book 3The Gayatri Seen by Vishvamitra
From the Vedic tradition. Vishvamitra was at first a king. Seeing the power of the sage Vasishtha's penance, he realised that the strength of tapas is greater than the strength of kings, gave up his throne and undertook fierce austerities. Through many obstacles and failures, through anger and desire, he at last became a Brahmarishi.
At the height of his penance a mantra shone forth in his heart. In the third book of the Rig Veda, with Vishvamitra as its seer, stands that mantra, the Gayatri: 'We meditate on the glorious light of the shining Savitr; may he inspire our understanding.'
From that day to this, millions recite it at the twilight hours of dawn and dusk. It asks not for wealth or victory, but for one thing only: 'inspire our understanding'. When Kambar calls the Goddess 'the sun that rises at the twilight prayer', it is this light of understanding that he has in mind.
