Explanation

The general view of the world is that wealth is good and poverty is bad. This verse turns that view a little. Poverty coming to good people is indeed painful, Valluvar says, but wealth coming to the unlearned is more painful still. The pain here is not to the owner alone but to the society around him.

Why so? One without learning does not know how to use wealth. He will use it on waste, pride and the scorning of others. His wealth brings harm to himself and to his kin. A good man in poverty will not give up his dharma; his pain is private. The wealth of the unlearned turns into pain for many.

The word 'innaathe' stands for what gives pain. Some commentators explain that the poverty of the good brings sorrow to others, but the wealth of the unlearned brings more. Others take it that in the poverty of the good the mind stays calm, while in the wealth of the unlearned the mind is without peace.

In life today we see that many who get sudden wealth do not know how to handle it, lose it, and hurt others. Wealth coming without knowledge leads only to loss. So it is right to seek the knowledge to handle wealth before seeking wealth.

At the same time Valluvar does not make light of the sorrow of poverty. It is pain. But it is a pain that a good man can bear while standing on the path of dharma.

A story

Kuchela

The tenth canto of the Bhagavata Purana tells the story of Kuchela, also called Sudama. Kuchela was a friend who had studied with Krishna in the gurukula of the sage Sandipani. A learned Brahmin, he suffered in poverty. His wife Susheela pointed to their hungry children and asked him to seek Krishna's help.

He hesitated. He felt it hard to ask a friend for anything. Yet at his wife's urging, he set out. Tying in a ragged cloth the humble flat rice they had at home as a gift, he went to Dwaraka. Seeing the splendour of the palace from afar, he was bewildered.

When Krishna learned of his friend's arrival he ran out and embraced him. He seated him on his own seat, washed his feet and honoured him lovingly. The two spoke happily of their old gurukula days. Krishna eagerly took and ate the flat rice that Kuchela had brought. Kuchela did not speak a word of his poverty.

When he returned home, he found a mansion full of wealth where his hut had stood. Without being asked, Krishna had known his need and given. Even after gaining wealth, Kuchela was not drowned in luxury. He went on living simply as before, thinking of the Lord, the Purana says.

The poverty of a good man is pain, but Kuchela's mind stayed fixed in dharma and friendship. Even in poverty he did not lose his character. When wealth came, his learning kept him safe. If wealth were to come to an unlearned man, there would not be such maturity. This is what the verse says.
