Explanation

Beauty is pleasing to the eye. But this verse points out that it is knowledge that gives life and meaning to beauty. The bodily beauty of one lacking subtle, noble and penetrating knowledge is like a clay doll painted in colour. The doll may be lovely, but within it is neither life nor thought.

The phrase 'nunmaan nuzhaipulam' names three features of knowledge. 'Nunmai' is the skill to know even small subtleties. 'Maan' is excellent dignity. 'Nuzhaipulam' is knowledge that enters deep and examines. One who has these three is the truly beautiful. The aim of the verse is that for one who lacks them, outward beauty is emptiness.

However beautifully a clay doll is painted, a single drop of rain can dissolve it. The subtlety of the comparison is that beauty without knowledge is also undone by a small test. Some explain 'punaipaavai' as a decorated doll, and others see in it a traditional image like the 'kolli paavai'. Whichever way the meaning is taken, the core is one.

There is no intent here to despise beauty. Beauty is good. But it becomes whole only when joined to knowledge. Beauty without knowledge is a useless ornament. Young readers of this verse are moved to learn, seeing that looks alone are not enough.

In life today social media gives first place to looks. But what wins lasting worth is not looks but thought and character. Beauty will fade at some time, while knowledge goes on growing.

A story

Shurpanakha and Rama

In the Aranya Kanda of Valmiki's Ramayana, Rama was living at Panchavati with Sita and Lakshmana. There came Ravana's sister Shurpanakha. She was captivated on seeing Rama's beauty. Knowing that her true form was fearsome, she took the shape of a beautiful woman and approached Rama.

She spoke with desire. 'Who are you? Why are you in this forest? I am the sister of Ravana, king of the rakshasas. Marry me,' she said. With a smile Rama replied gently, 'I am married. My wife is here. My brother Lakshmana is alone; go to him.' Rama said this to send her away gently, seeing the absurdity of her speech.

Lakshmana too refused her. When in anger she sprang to attack Sita, Lakshmana stopped her and cut off her nose and ears. She who had come in a lovely form ran away weeping in her natural fearsome shape. She thought to win by outward beauty, but her knowledge and character did not fit her disguise.

When the beautiful form fell away, the lack in her heart showed. She acted out of self-interest, without thinking of the consequence and without knowing her enemy's power, and her ignorance paved the way to her ruin. Later, because of her anger, all Lanka met destruction.

As a clay doll is painted and looks lovely to the eye, Shurpanakha's beauty too was only appearance. Within was no subtle knowledge. Therefore at the first test the disguise broke, and she met a great loss.
