Explanation

This verse says openly that it is the height of learning, not the height or lowness of birth, that gives a person worth. 'Merpirandhaar' are those born into a family that society counts as high. 'Keezhpirandhaar' are those born into a family counted as low. Valluvar says that those who lack learning, even with the pride of high birth, are not equal to the learned, though counted as low.

Here 'paadu' is greatness and worth. 'Anaiththilar' means they do not have that worth. This verse places the idea of family pride of that time below the greatness of knowledge. It is an important forward-looking thought of Valluvar. Elsewhere he also says 'pirappokkum ellaa uyirkkum', all lives are alike in birth. So it should not be taken here that he accepts the high and low of birth; the meaning is that he takes society's common idea and shows its futility.

Some commentators take 'merpirandhaar' as those born in a family of wealth and rank. In any case the inner thought is one: the worth that birth gives is by chance, and the worth that learning gives comes from effort. The worth that comes from effort is the one that stays.

In life today some people gain a lead at the start from family name, comfort and opportunity. But those with learning and hard work rise beyond that lead. Instead of a person's birth, what he does and what he knows should be the measure.

A story

Vidura

In the Mahabharata, Vidura was born to a humble maidservant. By the grace of Vyasa, the queens Ambika and Ambalika bore Dhritarashtra and Pandu. Their maidservant bore Vidura. By the custom of the royal family he was therefore counted as of lower birth, tradition says. Yet Vidura stood higher than all that family in dharma, justice and wisdom.

He served as a minister of Hastinapura. His word carried special weight in the assembly. He spoke fearlessly of Duryodhana's faults. He tried to stop the invitation to the dice game. Dhritarashtra called him many times to seek a remedy for his troubled mind. Those conversations are collected as the 'Vidura Niti' in the Udyoga Parva. In it Vidura speaks hundreds of thoughts to the king on justice, restraint, speech, friendship and learning.

When Krishna came to Hastinapura as the envoy of peace, he refused the feast in Duryodhana's palace and took his meal in Vidura's simple home. Though Bhishma and Drona were in Duryodhana's palace, Krishna chose Vidura. That choice came not from birth but from knowledge and dharma.

Later, knowing that war could not be avoided, Vidura broke his bow and took no part in the war. Yudhishthira honoured him as dharma itself. One counted in youth as a maidservant's son guided the royal house by his learning.

The glory that Duryodhana won, though he was born high and unlearned, did not last; Vidura, though counted as low, is honoured to this day for his learning. This is the living example of the verse.

To reflect on

Whom do you tend to respect first for family, title or background, and whom might you be overlooking for their learning and character?
