Explanation

Commentators read this verse in slightly different ways. Who are the 'enniyaar'? Some say they are the enemies, those who have planned to attack. The 'thunniyaar' are those who have joined a suitable position and stand there. On seeing those who have understood the place and taken their stand in it, the enemies lose their plan itself, is the meaning. Others explain it thus: those who have thought of acting, if they go to the right place and act there, will fulfil their thought; those who do not will lose their plan.

Whichever way it is explained, the basic point is the same: the enemy's schemes do not work against those who hold a suitable position. Any plan made against someone in a strong hill fort will falter. The attacker cannot use the methods he had planned.

There is a depth in 'enniyaar ennam izhappar'. To lose one's plan is not only for the scheme to become ineffective; it also means loss of confidence. The enemy is baffled by the strength of the place. He realises that his plan does not fit the nature of the position.

This can be applied to protection and to life. Slander or intrigue has little effect on someone who stands on firm ground. Others' evil designs do not pay against one established in an honest life, trustworthy friendship and savings. So 'place' is not only an outer fortification; it is also the firmness of one's standing in life.

A story

Sugriva on Mount Rishyamuka

From the Ramayana (Kishkindha Kanda): Vali, king of the vanaras, was extremely strong. He had a boon that half the strength of any opponent who stood before him would pass to Vali. His younger brother Sugriva, through a misunderstanding, fell victim to Vali's wrath and was driven out of the kingdom. Vali was searching to kill him.

Sugriva wondered where to hide. Vali could go anywhere, but in one place only he could not set foot: Mount Rishyamuka. Once when Vali killed the asura Dundubhi and flung his body, it fell on the hermitage of the sage Matanga and defiled it with blood. In anger the sage cursed, tradition says: "If Vali sets foot in this mountain region, his head will burst."

Knowing this, Sugriva stayed on Mount Rishyamuka with four ministers, including Hanuman. However strong Vali was, he could not enter that mountain. So Sugriva lived there without fear. All Vali's schemes were useless in that place.

When Rama came searching for Sita in that region, Sugriva at first suspected that he was Vali's man. He sent Hanuman to inquire. On Hanuman's counsel he befriended Rama. Only after gaining Rama's help did Sugriva come out of the mountain to face Vali, after a long wait and when the right ally had come.

Sugriva was weaker than Vali. Knowing his weakness, he chose a place where he could live safely. In that place his enemy could do nothing. This incident shows clearly the meaning of the verse that the enemy loses his plans before one who has taken his stand in a place of strength.
