Explanation

This verse gives honour to place over numbers. Valluvar says that if the one with the small army reaches a place suited to him, the one with the mighty army will lose his spirit. What is lost here is not the army's size but the rising of the mind.

In war, steadiness of mind is foremost. Even a great host cannot use its full size in a narrow pass or a dense forest. When the enemy strikes from a height or comes from an unexpected direction, the larger side's heart sinks. The feeling that numbers are of no use wearies him.

The word 'sellidam' is important. It means a place good for striking and for escaping. The one with the small army must first search out the field that suits him. There, with few soldiers, he can face the great enemy.

In life too, a small team can beat a large company, a small shop a big mall, an ordinary student a well-resourced one. For that they must find the place where their strength works.

So small numbers are not the cause of defeat; ignorance of place is. That is the thought of the verse.

'Urupadai' is a very large force, and its leader grows proud of his strength. That very pride opens the way for his spirit to collapse. When victory does not come as expected he is thrown into confusion. The one with the small army, knowing his limited means, stays careful, and that care brings him success.

Thus the verse teaches both sides: the strong must not be careless about ground, and the weak must not despair about numbers.

A story

Shivaji at Pratapgad

From Maratha chronicles (such as the Sabhasad Bakhar): Afzal Khan, commander of the Sultan of Bijapur, came with a great army to destroy Shivaji. He had cavalry, elephants and cannon. Shivaji had only a small force. In a straight fight on an open plain his defeat was certain.

Shivaji chose his ground. He chose the foot of Pratapgad fort amid the dense forests of the Sahyadri range. His Mavala soldiers knew that place well. On land full of narrow paths, thick undergrowth and ravines, Afzal Khan's horses and elephants could not operate.

Shivaji announced that he was ready for peace talks. Afzal Khan was made to leave his great army behind and come to the fort's foot with a small party. When he came, Shivaji wore hidden armour and had the tiger-claw weapon, the wagh-nakh, concealed. At the meeting Afzal Khan tried treachery. Shivaji met it with defence and brought him down.

Then the Maratha forces hidden in the forest suddenly emerged and fell on the Bijapur army. The loss of their leader and the unfamiliar ground together broke their spirit. The great army scattered and fled.

Shivaji, with a small force and a chosen place, destroyed the spirit of an enemy far greater in numbers.

Pratapgad still stands high in the Sahyadri hills. Those who visit see the nature of that land and how it served a small force. For one who knows the place, numbers are no obstacle.
