Explanation

In this couplet the word 'porul' occurs three times, each with a different meaning. The first 'porul' is worth or regard; 'porulallavar' are those of no regard. The second, in 'porulaagach cheyyum', is making them persons of regard. The third 'porul' is wealth. In this way Valluvar makes a beautiful play with one word.

The idea of the couplet is this: the world respects people for their wealth. Even if one has little learning or an undistinguished family, with wealth he gains regard. This should not be taken only as praise of wealth but as a statement about the nature of the world. Elsewhere Valluvar exalts regard that comes from character over regard that comes from wealth.

Commentators differ in how they view this couplet. Some take it as encouragement to earn wealth. Others say it points out a worldly truth and can serve also as a warning not to run too much after wealth. Both views find a place in the couplet.

So as the opening of the chapter, this couplet plainly states the power of wealth. The following couplets guide how that power should be rightly used. Only one who knows that the power exists can direct it along the good path. In every age society has fixed a person's place by looking at his wealth. Instead of merely blaming this, one may take it as a spur to seek wealth honestly. This couplet guides those whom poverty has lowered, while we must remember that regard won by wealth is unstable.

A story

Hiranyaka the Mouse and His Hoard

The Panchatantra and the Hitopadesha tell the story of a mouse. In a town a mouse lived in the hermitage of an ascetic. It jumped very high with great strength and easily reached the food pots the ascetic hung up and ate from them. However high the ascetic placed the food, the mouse reached it.

One day when a friend of the ascetic came, they wondered how the mouse could jump so high. When they dug into the mouse's hole they found a large hoard of gold inside. They understood that the mouse leapt with confidence thanks to the hoard. They took the treasure away.

The mouse, without its treasure, returned to its hole. Its body had not changed, but its courage had lessened. Now it tried to jump to the food pot and failed. Other mice did not respect it and moved away. The mouse grieved over its loss.

The tale also appears in the Hitopadesha as the story of the mouse Hiranyaka. There, when Hiranyaka lost his wealth he realised that all his companions had left him, and he says that a man without wealth is like one dead though alive. Later, by the help of good friends, he regains wealth.

The story is like a picture of the couplet 'there is nothing but wealth to make the unimportant important'. For the mouse, its wealth gave self-regard and power; when the wealth went, they went. At the same time the story gives a warning: regard that came from wealth goes with the wealth. Only when learning and character are joined does that regard last.

To reflect on

Do we have a habit of judging someone only by wealth, and how could we change it?
