Explanation

The lover recalls the incident in his heart. The beloved looked at him once. Having looked, she bowed her head in modesty. He takes these two acts as a great message. The look is the sign of her wish, and the bowing is the sign that this wish is mingled with modesty.

'Yaappu' means binding or joining. Some take it as love and some as friendship. In any case, the relationship budding between the two becomes here the 'plant' of the simile. Her look and her bowing watered it. When water is poured a plant flourishes, and in the same way his love flourishes through this sign of hers.

The beauty of the verse lies in turning two small acts into one great simile. Looking and bowing are simple, but to lovers they give life. Valluvar does not see her modesty as a fault; he makes it a fine sign of love. His hint is that without modesty love would become mere desire. There is another quality in this verse: it shows the gratitude that rises in the lover's heart. That she cast one look at him is itself a great gift to him, and her bowing adds the beauty of restraint to that gift. He does not take it as a right but receives it as a present. The subtlety is that love flowers not in claiming but in accepting with thanks.

A story

Parvati Bows Her Head

Kalidasa's Kumarasambhava is the poem about Parvati, the daughter of Himavan. Lord Shiva sat in penance in the Himalayas. By her father's command Parvati brought flowers every day and served him. She placed the flowers before him as he sat in meditation and stood by humbly.

In the scene Kalidasa sings, it is said that Shiva's heart stirred for a moment. He looked at Parvati's beautiful face. Parvati too looked at him and bowed her head in modesty. That look and that bowing said everything there. The poet shows that this incident was the beginning of Parvati's penance and love.

The Purana goes on to say that Shiva, feeling that the calm of his penance had been disturbed, grew wrathful at the cause, and Kama was burnt to ash. Parvati therefore performed still harsher penance and won Shiva by her true love and character. The story ends by showing that not beauty alone but penance and love prevail in the end.

Valluvar's verse fits this opening scene beautifully: she looked, and having looked she bowed. These two acts became the water for the plant of love. That is the power of a sign. Here modesty shines not as a fault but as the beauty of affection. The imagination of the scene belongs to the poet; this is a summary of the Purana, so the fine details may be read in the text itself.
