Explanation

The beloved speaks to the lover in the presence of others as a total stranger. Her words are reserved and formal. Yet the lover at once feels the gentleness inside those words. 'Uraaathavarpol' means as though unconnected, and 'seraaar' means those who bear no ill-will, that is, those who love.

The idea of the verse is simple: true love cannot be wholly hidden. Even if the words show outward distance, the tremor of the voice, the choice of words and the softness that appears in between reveal the heart. Lovers are sharp in knowing one another, so outward pretence does not work on them.

It also shows the nature of the period of secret love. Because they cannot show their love before society, the two behave as strangers. Perceiving the love hidden within that acting is the very act of perceiving signs. Valluvar says 'ollai', quickly: to know the sign of affection one needs no long time, a moment is enough. This subtlety is visible only to those who love; to others it appears as mere formal talk. Even when the words show distance, the sound of them rings with the sweetness of love. The lover knows the beloved's voice well, so even when she speaks formally he hears the eagerness concealed within. Thus in love the manner of speaking matters more than the meaning of the words. This verse stands in the middle of the chapter and shows pretence and truth together.

A story

Bahuka and Damayanti's Maid

The Nalopakhyana in the Vana Parva of the Mahabharata is a lovely example of this subtlety. Nala, who lost his kingdom at dice and parted from Damayanti in the forest, was bitten by the serpent Karkotaka, changed in form, and served as the charioteer 'Bahuka' to Rituparna, the king of Ayodhya.

Damayanti was in her father's palace. Hearing of Bahuka's skill in driving chariots and in cooking, she suspected he might be Nala. To make sure she sent her maid Kesini. Bahuka spoke like a stranger, concealing his true form.

Kesini repeated Damayanti's sorrowful words to him: how could a husband have gone away leaving his wife asleep in the forest? Hearing them, Bahuka could not contain his feeling and wept. The tradition says he explained that he had been under the sway of Kali and that this was why it happened, and he spoke in self-defence.

Though he behaved as a stranger, the love visible in his words and tears was reported to Damayanti by Kesini. Thus the verse 'though they speak as strangers, the words of the loving are quickly seen through' was fulfilled. Later the two were reunited. This is a tale of the Mahabharata, and for details of shape one should consult the source text. The lesson we gain is that the love of Nala and Damayanti could not be hidden by any disguise.
