Explanation

In this verse the lover praises the beloved's smile. She is of a gentle nature, and a unique beauty rests on her. When the lover looks at her with entreaty, her heart melts and she smiles softly. That smile adds still more beauty to her.

Commentators have given different explanations for this verse. 'Asaiyiyarku' can mean one of gentle gait, and 'eer' means beauty. 'Pasaiyinal' means affectionate or compassionate. In sum, the centre of the verse is that her melting heart is the spring of her beauty.

Valluvar here does not measure beauty only by outward appearance. He shows that a smile that trickles with affection is the true beauty. In that smile the lover learns that his gaze pleases her and that she accepts it with modesty. This is the sign he receives, and his hope grows because of it. 'Paiya' means softly. A soft smile shows moderate, restrained affection. A broad laugh would reduce modesty, while a soft smile lets modesty and love shine together. Thus in one small smile the beloved reveals her whole heart, and the lover rejoices at seeing it. Different commentators take 'eer' in different senses, but none differs on the smile being the centre of the verse.

A story

Sugarcane on Pongal Day

On Thai Pongal day, in Tamil homes new-rice pongal is allowed to boil over, thanks are given to the Sun, and sugarcane and bunches of turmeric are offered. In a small village a young man named Cheliyan carried the Pongal gifts to his maternal uncle's house. There his uncle's daughter Kayalvizhi had set a pot at the doorway and was cooking pongal.

Cheliyan placed the bundle of sugarcane at the door. Kayalvizhi looked up at him. She spoke not a word. He looked at her with a gently pleading gaze. Her face melted, and like the milk that boiled over in the pot, her smile slowly rose.

That smile added a special beauty to her face. Cheliyan saw her affection in it. He asked her not a single word. But that day his heart was sweeter than the pongal.

There is a custom in some of our villages of marrying within the kin. With the elders of both houses consenting, they were married. This is a scene from our culture, and the characters are invented. What Valluvar says, 'she of affection smiles softly', happened that day at their doorway. Kayalvizhi's tender heart was a companion to Cheliyan throughout his life. Pongal is the festival of Tamil gratitude, and on that day a young heart gave thanks for love as well. We consider the boiling-over of milk auspicious; in the same way her smile rising seemed an auspicious sign to him. Cheliyan spoke humbly to his uncle and made his request through the elders. To read the sign and then act with propriety is the beauty of our tradition.
